Spring Classes for 2013 are over.  This page will be updated with Fall Class Descriptions in early August, 2013

**********      BASIC LEVEL COURSES      ********** 

{A}    E-Mail for the Beginner (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Access to a computer with Internet access and basic computer skills in using the mouse and the keyboard.

This course will introduce the student to the very basics of e-mail on the Internet.  The goal will be to provide the student with the knowledge to do simple sending and receiving of e-mails on the Internet with your Internet Service Provider.  We will also cover basic security issues, the basics of opening attachments to E-mails. If student does not have an e-mail account, we will help you obtain a free Yahoo account.  Those students with an e-mail account must bring the E-mail ID and password to class.  The handout fee is $ 5.00.
 

{B1 & B2}    Introduction to Scanners (Four Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Basic Computer Skills.

This Scanning Class is a beginning class in learning how to use a scanner. Topics to be covered: how to make a scan, bitmaps, file formats, and image editing software.  The student will learn how to scan a picture and send it on the Internet (e-mail) as well as how to scan a picture to print.  Additional areas of interest will be picture cropping, color, brightness and contrast optimization.  There is no fee.
 

{C}    Computer Fundamentals for WINDOWS 7 (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Access to a computer outside of class is required.

This course concentrates on learning and practicing the functions of the mouse and keyboard. Students will be introduced to a number of exercises and games to sharpen their skills. At the conclusion of this course, the student should be comfortable in using the mouse and keyboard, have familiarity with using the computer, and have experience starting and using the WordPad and Paint Programs. The fee for the manual and practice files "CD" is $8.00.
 

{T}    Computer Introduction for Beginners

Prerequisite:  Access to a computer with the understanding that the student will practice the basic skills taught in this class.

This course is designed for the “beginner” and will teach basic skills including use and functions of the mouse and keyboard. The student will spend a considerable amount of time practicing in class with practice programs including puzzles and exercises. The course handout fee is $ 5.00.

 

**********      INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED LEVEL COURSES      **********

{D1 & D2}    Digital Camera (Four Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Ownership of a Digital Camera.  Student must have read the operators manual for the camera.

This course will help you become familiar with your camera.  It will teach you the various functions, modes, settings and care.  Basic photography techniques will be taught.  The handout fee is $5.00.  The Digital SLR Camera is not covered in this course.
 

{E}    Microsoft Moviemaker Photo Editing Course (Six Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Digital Camera Tutorial or the Instructor's permission.

This course will be using the free Windows Live Photo Gallery to import and edit photos by adjusting color, straightening, cropping, and stitching several photos to form a single panorama photo.  The student will also be shown how to organize their photo collection by adding tags and captions.  The last two weeks of the course will focus on using Microsoft Live Movie Maker to create slideshow videos with captions, video effects and music. The student will be shown how to share their photos and slideshows with family and friends. Your home computer must have the Windows 7 or Vista operating system for this course. The handout fee is $5.00.
 

{F}    2010 Microsoft Word (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Knowledge of computer operations and the Instructor's permission.

This course will introduce the student to the Word 2010 Program. Students will open documents and learn the following: text formatting; the use of the “clipboard”; print a document; use practice files from a “CD” to learn formats, fonts; open documents; employ spelling and grammar tools; learn find & replace; the use of the Navigation pane; change page margins; the document view tool; saving and recovering a document and printing and sending a document. Additional areas covered include: setting tabs for text/columns; finding and protecting lost documents; dealing with prior versions of word; use of “Help”; learn how styles are applied; using themes for uniform design; using templates; working with artwork and shapes; adding text boxes to documents; adding clip art to a document; editing/modifying and inserting pictures; positioning graphics and inserting page borders, colors and more. Each student will receive a comprehensive manual and a practice files “CD” for home study and review. The fee for the manual and “CD” is $ 8.00.
 

{G}    2010 Microsoft Excel (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Knowledge of computer operations and Instructor's permission.

The course will introduce students to various aspects used to create Excel spreadsheets and workbooks for every day applications. Students will learn how to create membership lists, address books and inventory lists using data entry. Basic formulas will be used to create simple budgets and household expense worksheets.

Students will then learn more advanced functions to control spreadsheet appearance and functionality in this intermediate level course including: viewing, splitting and arranging multiple spreadsheets; formatting text, dates, and borders; freezing and hiding of columns and rows; and developing charts and graphs will be covered in this course. Students are expected to practice data entry and learn how to create and use formulas to successfully complete this course. The fee for the manual and practice files “CD”is $ 8.00.
 

{H}    COMPUTER MAINTENANCE AND SECURITY (Four Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Computer Fundamentals or the Instructor's permission.

This course will teach the student how to maintain their computer to keep it running properly and how to fix slow-downs, freezes and other glitches. Students will be taught routine maintenance tasks including disk de-fragmentation, registry cleanup and file backup and restore. The course will teach the student how to install and maintain software to protect against viruses, spyware and identity theft. The handout fee is $3.00.
 

{J}    Email for the Intermediate User (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Email for the Beginner or the Instructor's permission.

This class will expand on the basics of sending and receiving e-mails. We will cover functions to enhance the appearance of your e-mails. We will also cover how to open and save e-mail attachments, how to attach files to your e-mails that you are sending as well as addressing security issues to protect you from problems and con artists. We will also cover E-mail folders, E-mail folder management and PC file management. Student must have an e-mail account and bring the ID and password to class.  The handout fee is $ 5.00.
 

{L1 & L2}    Print Artist (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisites:  Basic computer skills and a graphics program available on your computer.

The student will learn to make greeting cards, banners, calendars, photo albums, labels and more. This course will be an easy and fun introduction to computer graphics. This class will cover signs, posters, newsletters and photo albums.  The handout fee is $5.00.
 

{O1 & O2}    INTERMEDIATE FUNDAMENTALS FOR WINDOWS 7 (Eight Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Computer Fundamentals, preferably Windows 7, and the Instructor's permission.

This course will cover a wide variety of subjects including: working with the features of Windows 7; start menus; taskbars; enhancing word documents; exploring the WordPad, Notepad, and Paint programs; running programs and gadgets; learning several features including the calculator and sticky notes; and spend considerable time showing the student how to personalize their computer. The student will have the opportunity to practice and learn many new concepts created especially for Windows 7. The fee tor the manual and practice files "CD" is $8.00.
 

{P1 & P2}    Picasa (Four Week Course)

Prerequisite:  Computer Fundamentals, preferably Windows 7, and the Instructor's permission.  

An introduction to digital photo computer editing/processing and a free Picasa software download is included. Students will have the opportunity to edit personal photos and establish files. The course handout fee is $ 5.00.

{Q}    Facebook - Social Networking (Four Week Course) Revised

Prerequisite:  Knowledge of computer operations and Instructor's permission.

This course will teach the student how to use the most popular social networking tools so they can communicate and keep up with extended family and friends. The emphasis will be on using Facebook. Students will be shown how to create a Facebook profile if they don’t already have one. Students will also be shown how to understand and set Facebook privacy options, find friends, post status messages, upload photos and read and respond to friends and family postings. Other forms of social networking such as instant messaging, Twitter and Skype will be introduced and discussed.  The handout fee is $ 5.00

{U}    IEC Seminar

Open to SeniorNet Members.  Date and Topic will be announced prior to the beginning of Spring Classes.
 

{W}    PNC Seminar

Open to SeniorNet Members.  Date and Topic will be announced prior to the beginning of Spring Classes.
 

CLASS LOCATION - PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED MAP

All  classes are held in the media lab at the 1st Baptist Church on Lake Avenue.  Free parking is available behind the church with same-level entry into the hallway leading to the media lab.
 

IMPORTANT

SeniorNet Membership First Year Dues of $40 for a single new member or $60 for a couple may be paid either with the Mail-In Registration or during attendance at the Open House or Walk-In Registration.  Membership Fees will be collected at the start of each class if applicable.


NOTE - SeniorNet dues are tax deductible.
